For
Lands' Enders making the 40-minute commute between
Lands' End headquarters in Dodgeville, Wisconsin,
and their homes in nearby Madison, the llamas are
a daily sight - something we watch for.
You can spot them from the highway. In the green bowl of valley that
sweeps away from the roadside, they look like something out of Dr.
Seuss. The thick-coated animals thrive in our Wisconsin winters,
but are kept neatly clipped in the heat of summer. Trimmed with shaggy
ruffs around their necks and feet, they look a little bit like poodles.
Susan Kovacs is proprietress of the "Grand Harvest Llama Company."
It's a going concern. She sells llamas as pets and for breeding stock.
Their wool is purchased by spinning-and-weaving hobbyists, who gladly
pay premium prices - as much as $300 for "first clip" from an especially
fine animal. There are also cash awards to be garnered for the top
places at llama futurity shows. And Susan's llamas are an active
presence on the show circuit - a recent event earned Grand Harvest
a pair of top-place awards.
"I saw my first llama when I was a little girl at summer camp," Susan tells us.
A clump of llama fleece she took home with her was kept in her jewelry box for
years afterward. "I'd take it out and smell it," she says. "When I met my husband,
I told him that some day I would own llamas. Little did he know...."
She started 10 years ago with just 3 animals. The herd now numbers
around 130, including about 25 alpacas. And they all have names.
Llamas in the same family share a common name-theme. Indian tribes.
Flowers. Dance steps - Cha-cha, La Macarena, Paso Dobli. Susan's
favorite cities - Durango, Jerome, Venice. One family has heart-themed
names - the youngest is Hearts-Are-Gonna-Roll. "Because she's such
a knockout," Susan tells us.
She knows them all by sight. So does her 7-year-old daughter Olivia.
Olivia has grown up around llamas all her life. When Olivia was little,
she'd go to other people's houses and ask where their llamas were.
When they said they didn't have any, she'd say, "How sad." She couldn't
imagine life without llamas.
According to Susan, there's no such thing as a wild llama. They've
been domesticated more than 6,500 years - longer than horses. The
Inca called them "our speechless brothers," we're told. And they're
completely at home with people.
We comment how tranquil it is to share their company. On the day
we visited, the llamas were sedately gathered under the shade of
a leafy grove. They seem to find our presence quite companionable.
There is a discernible atmosphere of contentment - we can't remember
ever feeling such peace.
"We don't know why we love them," says Susan. "But there's something about them
that's positively serene."
